How to reduce uploading errors

Do you have to keep correcting the ATS when you submit your resume?

All those hiccups are likely because your document is heavily formatted OR it’s in a template.

Mainstream job boards have bleeding-edge technology and can mostly read WHATEVER formatting your resume has, but if you’re applying DIRECTLY to a hiring company, that HR platform might be a few (many) years old, so the information you’ve listed doesn’t match up with what the ATS has been set up to expect.

A few tips: When writing your resume, don’t use...
~ Headers
~ Footers
~ Text boxes
~ Columns
~ Photographs
~ A template of any kind

I’m sure template providers are completely well-intentioned, but if they’ve not sat in a recruiter’s seat and had to upload hundreds of resumes (and then fix what didn’t work), they won’t understand the consequences of behind-the-scenes formatting.

Think of it this way: German and Dutch are similar, and someone from Germany can go to Holland and communicate fairly decently. In the same manner, resumes in WORD can communicate nicely with most applicant tracking systems.

On the flip side, consider someone speaking Icelandic trying to communicate with someone speaking Swahili. There is ZERO overlap, and even speaking loudly and using hand gestures isn’t going to help. This is the same as a template resume being uploaded to an older ATS. There's little to no match-up.

To write your resume AND maintain your sanity, just start from scratch in a WORD document and use blank lines, bolding, and indents to create the look you want.
