How to Format My Screen for a Video Interview
Video interviews are great but the big question is, “Where do I look?” Do you look at the person’s face on the screen, or do you look at the camera? If you look at the camera, you can’t see their expressions. Aarrrghhh! What to do????
Using Your Desktop or Laptop: If you maximize the video screen, the distance between your computer camera and the other person’s eyeballs on the screen is wide enough to make it look (from their perspective) as if your eyes are half closed.
Instead, if you make the video window small and tuck close it to the computer camera, it'll give the appearance of your looking at the camera. Plus you now have space to put any notes you’d like to have on-hand during the interview.
Tip for the Laptop: If you're using a laptop, try to elevate the device so that the camera is at the same height as your face. This way you're sitting tall instead of being hunched over and looking down on your prospective new boss.
Tip for the Phone: Avoid using your phone for the video interview. If you absolutely have to, then DO NOT hold it in your hand. The movement and shakiness will only distract from your amazing conversation. Instead, mount the phone somewhere at eye level and in a stable spot.
Audio Tip: Whenever possible, use a headset or ear buds for your interview. This will ensure there is no echo or feedback coming from your speakers or a nearby object that could reflect sound, back into your microphone. Headset microphones (including those that come with ear buds) will also help to avoid picking up ambient noises in the room or just outside a nearby window or door.
Lighting Tip: If an interview is to present you in your proverbial best light…then make sure you are sitting in your literal best light. If possible, face a window with plenty of natural light to brighten your setting. If needed, place a lamp in front of you; don't shine a spotlight directly on your face; and do avoid sitting with any bright light source behind you. Preview yourself before you join the video call. Check your surroundings. If you can’t see you…they can’t see you.
Above all, be diligent in your preparation and it will pay off!
Stories from the trenches...
Here’s the conversation with candidate I had with a candidate after his interview:
Candidate: Thank you so much for helping me prep for the interview.
Me: You are so very welcome. Everyone has super powers and although I have terrible fashion sense and can't match my shoes, I can get you through the interview process.
Candidate: If you get me this job, I’ll buy you any pair of shoes you want.
